Pre-K children are ready to take their thinking further. Through project-based investigations they ask real questions, gather information, develop ideas, create and test solutions, collaborate and reflect. Academic preparation and independent thinking grow together — not in competition.
What a day holds
Two to three weeks on one problem. Long enough to get stuck, which is the part that matters.
Investigations that run for weeks
Long enough that the first idea fails and a second has to be found. That gap is where the learning is.
Children choose the approach
Same challenge, different attempts across the room. Then they compare, which is more useful than being told the answer.
Presenting and defending
Every investigation ends with children explaining their thinking to other children, who ask hard questions.
Kindergarten foundations, properly
Letters and sounds, number sense, writing their own name and then their own labels, sitting with a task for twenty minutes. All of it real, none of it drilled.

Ready, in things a child can actually do.
Foundations
Letter sounds, early decoding, counting and quantity, writing for a purpose, fine motor strength. Assessed by watching, not testing.
Stamina
The ability to stay with something difficult for twenty minutes without an adult standing over it.
Voice
A child who will say "I don’t think that’s right, and here’s why" to another five-year-old, and be right about half the time.

A lesson from this room
The Bird Feeder Challenge: the birds in the courtyard would not come to the first feeders. Children redesigned three times over three weeks — height, seed, and finally the squirrel problem, which nobody had predicted and which took the longest.
